The horse is presented to the judge 'in-hand' wearing nothing but a simple hunter bridle. The conformation, movement, and soundness of the horse are judged.
The horse is required to make a post that is no more than two paragraphs in length. Part of the challenge of halter classes is summing up all of your character's qualities in as few words as possible. Quality of role-play is not judged, and a smooth, flowing post should be favored over one peppered with enormous, rarely-used-IRL words.
Handlers must be present for in-hand classes, however they do not post. They should stand before their mounts and walk ahead/beside them when they are in motion. Gaits will consist of the walk and trot, and they are to be judged by the standards listed under 'Gaits'. Horse size and breed should be considered in the judging; ponies move slower than warmbloods, for example.
Horses in hunter classes are generally shown with a braided, banged tail, and with their mane and forelock in button braids. However, this varies for many breeds, especially drafts and ponies. USEF and breed club regulations should be followed. Competitors are allowed to announce to the judge in brackets if their breed is allowed to go without braiding and a website should be listed as proof. Some notable exceptions to the braiding rules include Welsh Ponies, Haflingers, Arabians/Half-Arabs/Anglo-Arabs, and Morgans. A good resource for breed specific braiding/grooming rules may be found here
Divisions for Hunter Classes: Pony (for horses measuring 14.3hh or under), Green (for inexperienced horses), Regular (open to all). Alternatively, classes may be split by breeds, such as: Pony (horses measuring 14.3hh or under), Arab & Half-Arab(for any horse at least 50% Arabian), Thoroughbred & Warmblood(for Thoroughbreds, Hanoverians, Trakehners, Oldenburgs, and any of the other various warmbloods AND half-warmbloods/Thoroughbreds), and Open (open to all other breeds).
--If hunter-in-hand is offered at a show, ALL competitors MUST show in hunter-in-hand in order to compete in hunter over fences or any hunt-seat equitation/gaits/pleasure classes!
RIDING DS USAGE: Riding DS is NEVER used in hunter-in-hand because... it's a ground class. o-o
